Koto ensemble concert in Tokyo

I attended my koto professor's concert with big koto ensemble in Tokyo.
It was very interesting for me because even there are some koto players in Europe we cannot listen to the big koto ensemble. Tokyo is wonderful

This kind of koto ensemble idea was born in Japan during the Meiji era (1868- 1912) after knowing the European Music. Till then, there was a big ensemble, for example, the Kabuki music in which there is no koto. Actually, the biggest ensemble for koto was Sankyoku (only trio).

Michio Miyagi who is one of the most important reformers of koto music had this idea of the big ensemble...which was an excellent idea

I hope one day there will be a koto ensemble with shinobues of course in EuropeđŸ˜€
In the last work "Variations on the theme of Etenraku", he put some instruments for Gagaku (traditional court music, which has existed since 8th century ) like, the sho (mouth pipe organ) and some gagaku percussions in the ensemble. This mixed of instruments from different field was also a big revolution in that period.

It was interesting to have also a European metal flute in that variation. Unfortunately, the flute player didn't have many notes to play so we didn't hear her so much. That was a pity for me as a flute player ☹️
Miyagi should have written chromatic scales on the flute part which is hyper difficult for Japanese flutes to show how wonderful the European metal flute is too! Maybe there were still not so many European flute players who could play well in that period.
It was also curious that all players were in kimono except that flute player who was in a black dress. For Japanese maybe the European flute player must wear the European dress, not the kimono.
