Japanese music notation

(History of music in Japan contains both Japanese and Western styles)

This is a music score of "Kanjincho" Japanese traditional music Nagauta edited by Sueharu Kitamura (1872-1931). In Meiji era (1868 - 1912), Japanese traditional musicians were looking for a new style for their own music. In 1896, a Kabuki theatre "Musume dojoji" with violin and positif organ took place in Tokyo. Because the Japanese traditional music are rarely written and were passed down orally to their students, there were many different styles for each school too. Ueharu Kitamura who studied the European music at the national conservatory thought the Japanese traditional music might disappear, so he tried to resolve it by using the European musical notation. Apparently there were a lot of difficulties to write Japanese music on the European system and it has not been carry on.

Miyazawa alto flute

Ordered 1 year ago, I received the flute on the ground at Miyazawa in Tokyo (Ikebukuro) during my holidays in Japan, nickel silver body with a silver head joint, in order to reduce its weight.

It sounds great and I look forward to playing it live.
